Youth and Community

I am currently co-director, with the brilliant David Gilbert, for Southwark Playhouse 14-18 group

In June of this year I ran workshops around the theme of Empathy for 9-12 year olds with poet and youth worker Ehireme Omoaka as part of SPINE Festival 2021 (Apples and Snakes)

Recently, I ran one of the Senior Intake Courses (18-21 yrs) for NYT of GB 2021. I directed 30 young people through an intensive 3 week course on devising, collaboration, creativity, ensemble theatre making and performance technique.

My past experience spans a wide range of engagement levels and contexts:

  • Working with small groups of young people on script writing and devising skills

  • Smaller scale shows with 20 young people in house and toured to London venues for IYAF

  • Large-scale gig-theatre production of 250 at Chickenshed Theatre

  • Delivery of movement and physical theatre workshops

  • Public speaking training

  • Work in schools

  • Engaging a wide range of ages from 5-25 years old

  • Often working with devising from scratch

  • Projects that have both a focus on theatre-making and social skill development

  • Engaging with a youth-led process where young people take a greater ownership over their process

  • Creative writing with participants to develop original scripts

  • Online workshop delivery - adapting practice to maintain creative engagement and creative connection during times of social restriction

I harness the process as much as the product when working with young people- evoking a sense of joy and a feeling of growth and achievement. Sometimes the focus is on everyday lived experiences and sometimes it is all about wild imagination. Playfulness, reflection and curiosity are at the heart of the process; creating space for genuine connection and collaboration
